This, the first Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) Requirements Workshop, was organized in order to help define the ASC program for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The goal of this workshop was to identify mathematics and computer science research and development topic areas that will be required to support future Department of Homeland Security operational requirements. This was accomplished by bringing together representatives from DHS, National Laboratories, Federal agencies and academia for intensive discussions on how the application of advanced computing technologies can contribute to the enhancement of DHS operational needs. The workshop will produce a formal report identifying relevant ASC capabilities, and matching them up with identified needs within DHS for improved operational capabilities. This workshop will be followed with additional workshops later in FY 2004 that will provide further detail on the advanced scientific computing requirements needed to advance technology for targeted specific application areas within DHS.

The format of the workshop was a series of presentations each morning, some by DHS S&T Portfolio Managers describing their portfolio responsibilities, some by technical experts discussing the state of the art in their research specialties, and some by representatives from the DHS Directorates other than S&T describing their mission needs. The information in these presentations was intended to help inform the workshop participants and to drive discussions in breakout sessions during the latter half of each day. These presentations and discussions were critical in providing the basis for the final workshop report.

This workshop was sponsored by the Advanced Scientific Computing R&D Program within the DHS Science and Technology Directorate. We thank the Krell Institute and the Institute for Scientific Computing Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for their assistance in organizing and facilitating this workshop.
